LEGENDARY
BAR-B-Q AND MUSIC
The jukebox music was soon augmented with Sunday afternoon
jam sessions featuring musicians such as Stevie Ray Vaughan,
Joe Ely, Terry Allen, Jimmie Dale Gilmore and Jessie "Guitar"
Taylor. It wasn’t unusual for big-name performers
like Willie Nelson, Tom T. Hall, B. B. King or George Thorogood
to drop by when they were in town - or anywhere near Lubbock.
In fact, Tom T. Hall wrote a song about his experiences
at Stubb’s. Hall’s song, The Great East Broadway
Onion Championship of 1978 tells the story of an early morning
pool game that took place at Stubb’s Barbecue between
himself and Ely in which they used an onion for the cue
ball.
Legend has it that Stevie Ray Vaughan
learned to play Tin Pan Alley over a plate of Stubb’s
barbecue by listening to it on Stubb’s jukebox. Sometimes
Stubb himself would take the microphone or would accompany
other musicians who were there to play for their supper.
People came from all over to enjoy the barbecue and to see
which well known musician might be joining the jam. Everyone
seemed to leave with a smile on their face.
